Alameda County DA Pamela Price to speak at hybrid town hall meeting on Sept. 13

On Wednesday,  Sept. 13 from 6:30-8:00 p.m., Faith in Action East Bay and the Interfaith Coalition for Justice in our Jails are co-sponsoring a hybrid Town Hall featuring the Alameda County District Attorney, Pamela Price.

From the press release:

The voters of Alameda County elected Pamela Price for District Attorney on a reform platform to oversee the prosecution of criminal violations and the protection of victims’ rights. One of her first policy changes limits the use of sentencing enhancements and was met with outrage by some. Others, including Yoel Haile, Director of the Criminal Justice Program at the ACLU of Northern California and moderator of the Town Hall, view such changes in a very different light. “This is the boldest policy in the country that seeks to end excessive punishment and incarceration. Research has shown time and again that prolonged incarceration does not improve public safety, and actually increases recidivism. This policy seeks to end racist sentencing enhancements that have been applied almost exclusively to Black and Brown people”

Join via Zoom webinar or in person (Niles Discovery Church, 36600 Niles Blvd, Fremont to hear how DA Price responds to questions submitted from the public in advance.  Registration is available HERE, where participants are encouraged to propose questions to ask the DA.  The event will include Spanish, Cantonese, and ASL interpretation if requested.  A recording will also be available from Faith in Action East Bay.

According to Dr. George C.L. Cummings, Executive Director of Faith In Action East Bay, “Decades of massive incarceration have failed to achieve the safety our communities need.  Alameda County judicial partners, including our newly elected District Attorney Pamela Price, have the opportunity to bend the system toward justice with policies and programs that hold people accountable yet are compassionate, racially equitable, and begin to meet the fundamental needs of our most vulnerable brothers and sisters.”
