The PUSD Board of Education welcomed four new student members — two from Piedmont High School and two from Millennium High School — to the school board on Wednesday night, the first meeting of the 2023-2024 school year. The PHS representatives — Siddharth Bhatia and Elena Stevens — and the two MHS representatives — Orla Cohen and Shakila Zuberi — were elected by their peers last spring. Bhatia and Cohen will serve in the fall and Stevens and Zuberi in the spring. Both student board members are expected to attend every meeting during their respective tenures.
In 2022 the school board upgraded what had been a relatively informal student board representative position to a more formal role as a preferential voting member of the Board. (This means students can vote to express an opinion on a motion but their vote is not counted in determining the vote required to carry any measure before the Board or whether a quorum is in attendance at a Board meeting.)
Last year’s members were Siddharth Bhatia (who was elected to return this year), Cleo Tahawi, and Gianna Yan.
Congratulations Elena, We are very proud of you.
