The Blotter | Suspect crashes stolen vehicle into Piedmont Park

On Tuesday, July 18, Piedmont Police posted the following report on social media:

Alerted by ALPR, PPD pursue BMW; crash, chase and arrest ensue

The Ace Hardware store on Grand Avenue was burglarized on July 9. The suspects arrived in three vehicles at approximately 4:17 a.m. They pried open the side door and cut a padlock, according to Piedmont Police Capt. Chris Monahan. The suspects took an estimated $100,000 worth of merchandise, money, and property from the business. The city’s Flock cameras recorded the suspect vehicles leaving Piedmont at 6:13 a.m., according to Monahan.

Workers arrived to open the business in the morning and reported the burglary at 8:45 a.m. after finding the rear doors open and property strewn over the parking lot.

An Amazon delivery driver had his personal vehicle stolen on July 8. The man was making a delivery on Grand Avenue. He left his 2007 Ford Mustang idling while he made his delivery at 3:08 p.m. When the driver returned, he found a male suspect in his vehicle. The driver chased the intruder away. However, he returned to the address to talk to the homeowner. While he was doing that, two suspects returned and one stole the Mustang. The other was driving a stolen Kia Rio, according to Monahan. Both vehicles fled south on Grand Avenue.

A suspect intentionally hit a Piedmont police vehicle in an incident on July 7. A report of a suspicious vehicle came in at 10:47 p.m. on Park Way. Someone was reported to be casing the area, looking into cars. Police responded a minute later and attempted to conduct a stop on a 2019 Kia Sorrento that had been reported stolen, according to Monahan.

The suspect or suspects were in the process of stealing a parked vehicle, according to Monahan. The driver then hit the police vehicle, causing minor damage to the front push bar. Monahan added that the suspect or suspects then fled in a silver or gray SUV at a high rate of speed.

Police are investigating the case as assault with a deadly weapon (the vehicle).

A man was arrested on July 7 when he was found to have a warrant from Arkansas. The man was reported to be drinking and smoking on school property on Park Boulevard at 7:44 p.m. He was contacted by police and was found to have a warrant from Washington County, Arkansas. The man was arrested with two bottles of brandy and 1.1915 ounces of suspected marijuana, according to Monahan. He was taken to Santa Rita Jail in Dublin and Washington County officials were advised for extradition.

A man was arrested and a stolen vehicle returned to its owner on July 8. At 1:27 a.m., a 2004 Honda Pilot SUV set off the city’s Automated License Plate Reading system near Grand and Wildwood avenues. Police responded and the vehicle was stopped. The driver was arrested and taken to Santa Rita Jail. The victim arrived on the scene and told officers she had reported the stolen vehicle to San Leandro police.

A man with a warrant for assault with a deadly weapon was arrested on July 13. A traffic stop on Oakland Avenue was conducted at 1:27 a.m. on a 2015 Nissan Altima with “multiple vehicle violations,” according to Monahan. The driver was found to have the warrant from Oakland and was taken to Santa Rita Jail.
