What’s the Deal With …?

Julie Reichle

The first spectator chairs for the July Fourth parade appeared this week.

New to town? You may be wondering why sets of lawn chairs start sprouting up along Highland Avenue around this time every year. It’s a longstanding tradition — neighbors stake out the best viewing spots along the July Fourth parade route that starts at the intersection of Park Way and Highland Avenue and ends just past Piedmont Park.

Don’t worry if you haven’t claimed a spot — it’s really not necessary as there’s plenty of room along the sidewalks the day of the event for all to see the fun. If you do choose to set up chairs, please be mindful not to block driveways and the sidewalks and to be respectful of neighbors along Highland Avenue.
