Deadline is May 7 for high school voting rights essay contest

Open to juniors and seniors, the League of Women Voters of Piedmont will award $500 to the first place entry.

The League of Women Voters of Piedmont is proud to be sponsoring its fourth annual essay contest open to all high school juniors and seniors who are either 1) currently enrolled in Piedmont High School or Millennium High School or 2) residents of Piedmont, California.

This year’s 250-500 word essays must be submitted by May 7, 2023 and answer the question, “In the last decade, the US Supreme Court has severely weakened the Voting Rights Act of 1965 (VRA), which was widely agreed to be the most effective civil rights law in our history. What action can the League of Women Voters take to counteract the negative effects of the Supreme Court’s decisions regarding voting rights, specifically those that place hurdles upon voting?”
