Robust response to Rec Commission survey of older adult activities

PRD's Walking-on-Wednesday group offers an informal activity for 50+ year-olds who enjoy casual walks in and around Piedmont.

The Piedmont Recreation Commission announced today that community response to its survey of older adult recreational activities and interests exceeded all expectations with a total of 499 people responding. The survey closed on April 11 with 313 Piedmonters and 186 non-residents participating.

A Recreation Commission subcommittee developed the survey to better understand the recreational activities of older adults and their desires. The results are intended to help the Piedmont Recreation Department expand its older adult programing. The subcommittee is composed of commissioners Lisa Gardner and Dick Carter with Recreation Department staff support from Recreation Supervisor Eva Phalen. Piedmont volunteer Wendy Fitzgerald helped the subcommittee develop the survey.

Sub-committee Chair Lisa Gardner expressed her appreciation to the respondents and to the community groups that encourage participation in the survey: “We are delighted so many people, both Piedmonters and non-Piedmont residents, shared with us what they do for their recreation and what else they want. We could not have achieved this outstanding response without the Recreation Department, its activity groups, the City, the Piedmont Adult School, the Piedmont Center for the Arts, Piedmont Exedra, Piedmont Post, the Piedmont Pickleball group, the League of Women Voters, and others asking their members, participants, and readers to take the survey.

“A big thank you goes to all who made this such a big success.”

The subcommittee will present the survey results along with its report and recommendations regarding older adult recreational programing at a future Recreation Commission meeting.
