Piedmont boys tennis rolls through five matches

Piedmont High School’s boys tennis team swept through five matches to up its record to 10-4 on the season.

The Highlanders defeated Bishop O’Dowd, Castro Valley, Alameda twice, and Arroyo in West Alameda County Conference play.

On March 23, Piedmont defeated host Bishop O’Dowd, 4-3. Lucas Smolko beat Neo Chai at No. 1 singles, 6-2, 6-3, as the Highlanders won three of four singles matches. Ben Breber overcame Colin Sweeney at No. 2, 6-3, 6-4. Ethan Pham won over Elias Cross at No. 3, 6-2, 6-4. Kian Jamali downed Brady Colbert in the No. 4 match to win one for the Dragons.

Piedmont’s Nate Welch and Monte Imburg won the No. 1 doubles match over Alex Byrd and Max Hamilton, 6-4, 1-6, 6-2. Bishop O’Dowd won the other two matches, with Peter and Lucas Tanaka beating Arun Brahma and Nick King, 7-6 (5), 6-3 and James Hollins and Jack Gonzalez defeating Willie Tenney and Graham Alban at No. 3, 6-2, 6-7 (3), 6-0.

On March 30, Piedmont defeated host Castro Valley, 7-0. Lucas Smolko beat Arik Hoffman at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-0. Ben Breber took the No. 2 match over Joshua Kaivana, 6-3, 6-1. Ethan Pham downed Curris Nguyen at No. 3, 6-1, 6-3. Alex Zalewski beat Justin Chen at No. 4, 6-0. 6-0.

Arun Brahma and Nick King won the No. 1 doubles match over Daniel Priem and Elliot Simon, 5-7, 6-2, 11-9. At No. 2, Willie Tenney and Graham Alban beat Isaac Thongthap and Blake Larkin, 6-2, 6-0. And at No. 3, Xiaowei Elias and Torsten Olsen downed Alex Chen and Alex Chang at No. 3, 6-4, 6-0.

On April 4, Piedmont beat host Alameda, 7-0, dropping just nine games on the afternoon. Smolko beat Elek Strong in the No. 1 singles match, 6-0, 6-0. Breber won at No. 2 over Aidan Boscovich, 6-0, 6-0. Pham took the No. 3 match over Yian Pan, 6-1, 6-0. And Zalewski beat Elvis Yi at No. 4, 6-1, 6-1.

In doubles, Monte Imburg and Nate Welch beat Caleb Wong and Xander Kong, 6-2, 6-1. Brahma and King downed Luke Saum and Kyle Banducci at No. 2, 6-0, 6-0. And Tenney and Alban defeated Colby Ovazak and Abhi Mummidi at No. 3, 6-2, 6-1.

The next day, the Highlanders hosted Alameda in a makeup match and won, 6-1. Breber beat Strong at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-0. Pham downed Boscovich at No. 2, 6-2, 6-4. Pan beat Brahma at No. 3 for Alameda’s lone win, 0-6, 6-4, 10-2. Brady Colbert defeated Wong at No. 4, 6-2, 6-2.

Imburg and Welch beat Yi and Kong at No. 1 doubles, 6-0, 6-1. At No. 2, Alban and King defeated Saum and Banducci, 6-1, 6-1. And Tenney and Chris Li beat Makana Berzabal and Mummidi at No. 3, 6-4, 6-1.

On April 6, Piedmont won at Arroyo, 7-0, in another makeup match. Smolko beat Hector Martinez at No. 1, 6-1, 6-0. Brahma downed Timonth Fan at No. 2, 6-2, 6-4. Welch defeated Anthony Tran at No. 3, 6-0, 6-0. And Colbert beat Wesly Wong at No. 4, 6-2, 6-2.

In doubles, Alban and King won at No. 1 doubles over Luke Dinn and Kyle Liu, 6-1, 6-0. Li and Tenney beat Rajib Lumle Moktan and Ethan Thai at No. 2, 6-0, 6-0. Zalewski and Elias downed Jericho De La Cruz and Binh Nguyen, 6-2, 6-2.
