Linda off-leash dog area reopens after heavy rains

Soggy hillside at the dog park after Feb. 23 rain

From a City of Piedmont press release on April 6:

The City of Piedmont reopened the Linda off-leash dog park on April 5. The City will keep the dog area open as long as it is possible to do so safely, but community members should expect future temporary closures if heavy rains return.

The City first temporarily closed the off-leash dog area this season in December 2022 due to hazardous conditions created by the first in a series of heavy rains. Slippery conditions, soil erosion, and unstable walking surfaces were exacerbated during the weeks of severe storms in January 2023, forcing an extended closure. The dog area reopened briefly on February 20, only to close again due to rain four days later.

For the last several weeks, public works staff have been regularly inspecting the site to determine when the dog area could reopen. It is likely that the park will need to temporarily close and that maintenance work will need to be done after most, if not all, future rain events.

The City appreciates the importance of this space to the community. Public works staff are actively exploring medium and long term mitigation options to ensure its continued viability.
