The Piedmont High School boys tennis team rebounded from a tough start of the season to record a 4-3 victory against visiting Campolindo on March 8.
No. 1 Lucas Smolko defeated Kumars Koopah, 7-5, 6-3. Ben Breber beat Edgar Alford at No. 2, 6-0, 6-7, 10-4. Ethan Pham downed Jake Hammerman at No. 3, 6-4, 4-6, 10-6.
The Highlanders’ No. 1 doubles team of Monte Imburg and Arun Brahma downed Tyler Panos and Rex Pastorm, 6-3, 1-6, 10-7.
The Cougars took the other two doubles matches, with James Martin and Viggo Wirstrom defeating Nate Welch and Graham Alban at No. 2, 7-5, 6-0. At No. 3, it was Luke Yan and Brady Adams beating Xiaowei Elias and Will Tenney, 6-2, 6-2. Linus Wirstrom topped Nick King at No. 4 singles for Campolindo, 6-1, 6-1.
Piedmont opened the season on March 1, losing on the road at Branson, 6-0. Smolko’s match at No. 1 singles Max Goldman did not finish due to darkness.
Tommie Higgins beat Pham in No. 2 singles, 6-0, 6-4. Pete Stovell downed Imburg at No. 3, 6-3, 6-2. Ishwar Jayaraman defeated Brahma at No. 4, 6-2, 6-1.
In doubles, the Bulls’ No. 1 team of Leighton Fraser and Chase Hoeveler beat King and Welch, 6-2, 6-0. Andrew Peng and James Stovell downed Alban and Tenney at No. 2, 6-2, 6-0. And Cal Keenly and Zander Alpert defeated Chris Li and Zach Berg to complete the sweep, 6-1, 1-6, 10-7.
The next day, the Highlanders fell at Berkeley, 6-1, to open West Alameda County Conference play. Imburg had the lone point for Piedmont, winning at No. 3 singles over Celion De Lubrouille, 6-3, 6-0. The Yellowjackets’ Sze Ting Chen beat Smolko at No. 1, 2-6, 6-3, 10-6. Leighton Sproul beat Pham at No. 2, 6-1, 6-4. Henry Grant downed Brahma at No. 4, 6-7 (6), 6-1, 10-6.
Joaquin McCall and Justin Sim beat King and Welch in No. 1 doubles, 6-1, 6-2. Yanir Charney-Weintraub and Bo Spears defeated Alban and Brady Colbert at No. 2, 6-1, 6-1. And at No. 3, it was Ayush Shah and Carter Ng-Yu beating Tenney and Elias, 6-2, 6-2.
On March 7, Piedmont evened its WACC record at 1-1 with a 7-0 win over visiting Castro Valley. The Highlanders dropped just one set all afternoon.
Smolko won the No. 1 singles over Ayden Lui, 6-2, 6-2. Breber beat Arik Hoffman at No. 2, 6-1, 6-2. At No. 3, Pham downed Daniel Lionel, 6-1, 6-1. And Imburg won the No. 4 match over Joshua Kuwana, 4-6, 7-5, 7-5.
Brahma and King beat Raymond Chin and Elliot Simon at No. 1 doubles, 6-0, 6-2. Welch and Alban defeated Curris Nguyen and Joshua Mak, 6-1, 6-4. And Alex Zalewski and Li beat Daniel Priem and Gabriel Ohara at No. 3, 7-5, 6-2.
