Piedmont High School senior Julia Banuelos was selected as one of 300 recipients of a national Hispanic Heritage Foundation Youth Award. The Youth Awards program honors Latinx high school seniors who excel in the classroom, community, and other categories.
This year, nearly 30,000 accounts were created for the Youth Awards. From those, three students were selected for each category in 10 different regions across the country. Each awardee will receive a grant to fund their college education or to fund a community service effort that tackles a social issue.
This year’s categories include: Business and Entrepreneurship, Community Service, Education, Engineering, Green Sustainability, Healthcare and Science, Media and Entertainment, Public Service and Social Justice, Sports and Fitness, and Technology.
Banuelos was awarded a Gold Medallion for the Healthcare & Science category. The Youth Awards prepare and position Latino youth through the Latinx On Fast Track (LOFT) program as they transition from high school, to college, to graduate school, and into their careers.
