Piedmont Language School expands Spanish instruction

Piedmont Language School is bouncing back from COVID and offering expanded in-person Spanish instruction for Piedmont kids. They offer a unique on-campus experience taught by native Spanish speakers, conveniently located on Piedmont school campuses before and after school.

Parents have long used Piedmont Language School classes to supplement the Spanish instruction taught by Piedmont Unified School District which starts in 7th grade. They can also be a useful way for parents to expand the school day because the classes take place on campus directly before after school.

The switch to online instruction during COVID presented a challenge to Piedmont Language School which prefers to offer language instruction in person, especially for the youngest students. It is difficult for a kindergartner to focus and understand a foreign language over a screen. The school’s enrollment dropped during this time as parents were wary of giving little kids more time in front of a screen.

The school is now back to in-person classes and has hired a new Executive Director, Jennifer Poole, who is a Piedmont parent of kids at Havens, Piedmont Middle School, and Piedmont High School. Jennifer is passionate about kids’ exposure to language at a young age and is looking to expand enrollment and the school’s language offerings for Piedmonters.

“The elementary years are a unique time in a child’s language development and ability, and I feel all children should be exposed to other languages and cultures during this crucial age. Since we don’t have a school offering, Piedmont Language School’s classes are absolutely essential to ensure our kids are ready to be global citizens. I look forward to further developing our programs in conjunction with the community.”

Jennifer Poole, PLS Executive Director

PLS offers classes for elementary and middle school students. Classes are forming and registration is now open.
They will also be offering Mandarin classes locally and registration for those will open soon.
