Piedmont swimming defeats Mt. Eden, Encinal

The Highlander swim teams finished the regular season on April 22 with two wins.

Piedmont’s boys defeated Mt. Eden, 121-43, and Encinal, 108-61. The girls defeated the Monarchs, 129-33, and the Jets, 102-68.

The three teams competed together in each event, and the scores were broken out into dual meet scoring.

The girls’ team swept all three relays. Josie Oesterer (backstroke), Taylor Rolefson (breaststroke), Kate Aubrecht (butterfly), and Tyler Dacanay (freestyle) took the 200-yard medley relay in two minutes, 1.0 seconds. Aubrecht, Oesterer, Rolefson, and Sonia ten Grotenhuis won the 200 freestyle relay in 1:44.94. Dacanay, Odessa Dando, Emily Fitzgerald, and ten Grotenhuis were victorious in the 400 freestyle relay in 4:27.71.

Aubrecht, who recently announced her commitment to swim at Amherst College, won two individual events. She took the 50 freestyle in 25.35 and the 100 freestyle in 57.68. Rolefson was first in the 500 freestyle (5:51.80) and second in the 100 butterfly (1:06.41). Oesterer was first in the 100 backstroke in 1:01.75. Ten Grotenhuis had a pair of seconds in the 200 individual medley (2:28.64) and 100 backstroke (1:10.04).

Dacanay was second in the 200 freestyle in 2:20.09 and third in the 100 butterfly in 1:13.32. Shelby Cavanaugh was second in the 100 breaststroke in 1:21.56 and third in the 50 freestyle in 29.21.

The boys swept the relays as well. The team of Simon Lins (backstroke), Evan Byun (breaststroke), Ryan Stokes (butterfly), and Tom Rolefson (freestyle) won the 200 medley relay in 1:48.03. The same foursome won the 200 freestyle relay as well in 1:35.16. Evan Dickason, Holden Temple, and Andrew Grasman won the 400 freestyle relay in 3:59.99.

Lins won the 50 freestyle in 21.33 and the 100 backstroke in 1:03.48. Tom Rolefson took the 200 freestyle (2:07.65) and 100 freestyle (56.28). Stokes won the 100 breaststroke in 1:06.50 and took second in the 200 medley (2:14.85).

Byun was second in the 100 breaststroke in 1:10.65 and third in the 200 individual medley in 2:21.58. Declan Linnane finished second in the 200 freestyle in 2:15.12 and third in the 100 freestyle in 59.90. Farris Saffouri was second in the 100 freestyle in 56.30. Chuck White took second in the 50 freestyle in 25.21. Temple was second in the 500 freestyle (6:52.58). Grasman was second in the 100 backstroke (1:04.93).

Piedmont’s girls finished the season 6-2 in dual meets. The boys were 5-3. The teams will now head to the West Alameda County Conference championships on April 29 at Chabot College.
