Piedmont swim team continues with strong marks

The Highlanders competed in West Alameda County Conference meets on back-to-back days and produced several strong performances.

On March 31, the Highlanders boys and girls earned wins over San Leandro. The girls also defeated Bishop O’Dowd, while the boys lost to the Dragons.

On April 1, both teams fell short against Alameda.

Piedmont swept the girls relays in the three-way meet against San Leandro and Bishop O’Dowd. In the 200-yard medley, Sonja ten Grotenhuis (backstroke), Taylor Rolefson (breaststroke), Josie Oesterer (butterfly) and Kate Aubrecht (freestyle) combined to finish in one minute, 57.69. The same foursome completed the 200 freestyle in 1:43.5. The team is undefeated on the year.

In the 400 freestyle relay, it was Maddie Payne, Annika Nilsson, Shelby Cavenaugh, and Odessa Dando coming home in 4:13.6.

Rolefson was second in the 200 freestyle with a North Coast Section consideration time of 2:02.64. She also won the 100 butterfly in 1:03.4.

Oesterer won the 200 individual medley (2:20.92) and 100 backstroke (1:02.2). Aubrecht won the 50 freestyle in 24.8, with teammate Payne second in 26.2. Aubrecht also was second in the 100 freestyle in 54.71.

Cavenaugh won the 100 breaststroke in a time of 1:19.3.

Simon Lins (backstroke), Ryan Stokes (breaststroke), Tom Rolefson (butterfly), and Evan Byun (freestyle) won the boys 200 medley relay in 1:45.29. Lins, Stokes, Tom Rolefson, and Farris Saffouri won the 200 freestyle relay in 1:32.27.

Lins took the 50 freestyle (21.18) and 100 backstroke (58.7). Stokes was champion in the 200 individual medley in 2:10.80. Tom Rolefson took second in the 200 freestyle in 1:59.14, and Saffouri was second in the 100 breaststroke in 1:07.3.

The next day against Alameda, Tyler Dacanay was best in the girls 200 freestyle in 2:19.97. She went 1-2 with teammate Payne in the 200 individual medley. Taylor Rolefson’s second place time of 25.35 in the 50 freestyle is an NCS consideration time. She was also second in the 500 freestyle in 5:38.78.

Payne won the 100 freestyle in 59.69. Ten Grotenhuis took first in the 100 backstroke in 1:08.10. Dando was second in the 100 breaststroke (1:25.81).

The boys 200 medley team of Andrew Grasman (backstroke), Byun (breaststroke), Charlie White (butterfly), and Tom Rolefson (freestyle) was first in 1:51.53. Tom Rolefson took second in the 200 freestyle (2:02.19) and 100 freestyle (52.78). Byun was second in the 50 freestyle (24.91). Grasman was second in the 100 backstroke in 1:04.06, while White was second in the 100 breaststroke in 1:09.19.
