Changing Souls, Changing Lives, Creating Community
Dr. Martin Luther King’s vision for inclusive communities calls on us to reflect and change ourselves, as well as embrace the interdependence necessary for everyone to live together in peace. “Our goal is to create a beloved community and this will require a qualitative change in our souls as well as a quantitative change in our lives,” King said.
Committing to our own personal and family anti-racist learning journeys and being intentional about racial equity is the focus of Piedmont’s 25th annual MLK Day Celebration.
Zoom Program: 11:00 am – 12:30 pm
This year’s virtual program, co-sponsored by the Piedmont Anti-Racism & Diversity Committee (PADC) and the City of Piedmont, will feature performances by traditional Native American flutist Vince Redhouse and the Oakland Interfaith Youth Choir. Speakers will include Congresswoman Barbara Lee; Assemblymember Buffy Wicks; Piedmont Mayor Teddy Gray King; Dr. Clayborne Carson, founding director of the MLK Research and Education Institute; and Anna Malaika Tubbs, author of “The Three Mothers.”

Art and Essay Contest
And for the first time this year, PADC is sponsoring an art and essay showcase for children and teens featuring this year’s theme: What does building a beloved community mean to you and how can we create an inclusive and beloved community in Piedmont? Submissions may be featured in the MLK Celebration program. For more information, click here.
Donations to PADC are welcome and are collected through PayPal here. Proceeds from this event will benefit racial equity and anti-racism education in Piedmont and surrounding communities.
