Popular Piedmont Ave restaurant closes its doors for dinner

After nine years, Homestead restaurant owners Liz and Fred Sassen announced this week that they plan to phase out their dinner service by mid-June, citing a desire for a lifestyle change. The restaurant had a loyal local following and was known for its seasonal menu and cozy dining room. The lunch operation, The Humble Sandwich, will continue to remain open for Tuesday through Saturday, 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

They posted the following note on Instagram:

To our dear supporters, our friends and family in this community,

The time has come to turn the page on this chapter of Homestead.

Nine years ago we opened this restaurant as an extension of our lives and home; as a place to gather, elbow to elbow with our neighbors; to break bread and share meals. In spite of these goals—which are wholly incompatible with Covid-19 restrictions—we’ve been fortunate to survive the last 14 plus months of this pandemic due to your support, our loyal and loving community. Throughout the winding road this past year took us on, we’ve been able to methodically think about our future. This past year has highlighted many necessary changes that we need to make in our lives.

Even as things are slowly opening up we have realized that it’s time for a lifestyle change. This is going to be an evolving transition for us. With that said, we will be ceasing dinner operations this Summer. However, as we navigate these changes The Humble Sandwich will remain open.

We achieved what we set out to accomplish and then some in nine years of dinners, and feel proud of the work we have done. We feel we can gracefully move on to something new.

Thank you to our treasured guests. We have never worked somewhere with such a massive “regulars” list and you have each added so much value to our lives over this incredible journey.

Our last dinner service will be in mid-June, look for the official date coming soon.

Our casual offshoot The Humble Sandwich will continue take-out lunch service for the foreseeable future, Tuesday through Saturday, 10:30 am to 2:30 pm.

With love,
Liz and Fred Sassen
