Scouts recognize Sue Smegal with Silver Beaver award

Julie Reichle

Sue Smegal is the recipient of the Silver Beaver Boy Scout Award

Each year, the Council recognizes volunteers who have performed outstanding service to Scouting and the youth in the community at the Annual Recognition Dinner. Longtime volunteer Sue Smegal has quietly and competently worked behind the scenes for decades.  For many years, her service on the Piedmont Council’s Executive Board, Advisory Board, and her continuing service on the Eagle Board of Review has upheld the Council’s mission to support youth and families throughout the community.

Prior to that time she was an active volunteer supporter of Troop 15 when her son was in scouts, serving in various unit roles.

Smegal has consistently served youth in our community with humble and skilled service.

Outside of her work with Scouting, Smegal served as a middle school teacher for 11 years. Prior to that, she served on the PUSD Board of Education for two terms. Sue was recently recognized with the Art Hecht Volunteer of the Year Award by the Piedmont Unified School District for over 45 years of youth-focused service.

She also served with several other nonprofits, including the Ann Martin Center, Hill Branch Children’s Hospital Oakland, and the Alameda county Child Abuse Prevention Task Force.

Smegal clearly lives the value of “Always Kids First!”

  1. Big, Wonderful Congratulations to Sue on this very special award!!!!! I’m grateful to have been a scout in Piedmont Troop 11 led then by scoutmaster Ray Poulton, also a recipient of the Silver Beaver. In that short time there was so much learned about life’s better directions that could never have come from books or traditional school. I only wish I had stayed in the Scouting program long enough to achieve Eagle, as did my nephew, Ryan Stehr. Sue and Tom have also been very generous, opening their home for special events of the PHS Class of 1960 — a home, which is my favorite in all of Piedmont!!! –JAS
