A PG&E transformer was set on fire and disrupted electrical service following a vehicle crash on Shepherd Canyon Road between Snake Road and Paso Robles Drive in the Montclair district of Oakland, the Oakland Fire Department said Tuesday afternoon.

The crash, reported about 4:30 p.m., downed a utility power and cut off power in the hills and Montclair Village business district.

The fire was contained and the driver has been hospitalized, officials said. There is no other imminent fire threat, but the road is closed and motorists are asked to avoid the area as police and fire crews tend to the scene.
