A virtual inauguration ball Sunday afternoon will celebrate Vice President-elect and Oakland native Kamala Harris with local pomp and fanfare.

The Oakland Symphony’s free “Oakland Salutes: Madame Vice President” concert will stream live on YouTube and Facebook Live at 3 p.m., and available on demand after the event.

“The pandemic is keeping all of us from gathering in Washington, DC and in other places, so the Oakland Symphony has produced a Virtual Inauguration Ball in order to celebrate this historic transition of power,” the symphony said in a written statement.

Oakland Symphony Conductor and Music Director Michael Morgan curated the program of performances from more than 25 local performing groups and arts organizations, including choristers, dancers, and spoken word artists. Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf will also speak at the event.

Harris will be sworn in as the 49th vice president on Wednesday, January 20, 2021.
