Bay Area coronavirus updates | Thurs., Aug. 27

The latest developments around the region related to the novel coronavirus, also known as COVID-19, as of Thursday afternoon include:

  • Santa Clara County Superior Court Presiding Judge Deborah Ryan issued an order on Wednesday extending through January an emergency bail schedule intended to force much earlier release of detainees. The order requires bail be set at $0 for most non-violent felonies and misdemeanors. Exceptions include any violation of a restraining order, for example.
  • The Oakland Tool Lending Library is launching its sidewalk tool pickup services Thursday, the Oakland Public Library announced. The OTLL, located at 5205 Telegraph Ave., is a branch of the city’s public library and offers more than 5,000 tools that can be borrowed by Oakland, Emeryville and Piedmont residents and property owners.
  • As the COVID-19 pandemic continues and the school year begins, San Francisco city leaders joined other public officials, including vice presidential candidate Sen. Kamala Harris, on Wednesday to call on schools to stand up against racism aimed at students of Asian and Pacific Islander descent. The leaders, along with organizers from Beyond Differences and the Community Youth Center of San Francisco, are asking schools to take part in the Stand Up for Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) Youth During COVID program. Students have increasingly been exposed to racist language and attacks since the virus arrived in the U.S early this year, and schools lack the tools to have address it, the organizers said.
