Committee to hear bill to require backup power for cell towers

State legislators Tuesday will hear a bill that would require cellphone companies to have backup power for their cell towers so users can make calls during a planned wildfire power outage.

Senate Bill 431, sponsored in part by Sen. Steve Glazer, D-Orinda, will require mobile phone companies to provide 72 hours of backup power to cell towers if utilities shut off power.

The hearing starts at 10 a.m. before the Assembly Communications and Conveyance Committee.
