Oakland police ask business owners for help in identifying looters

The Oakland Police Department is calling on business owners to help identify people who looted, vandalized or damaged local businesses since May 29, when protests against police brutality and racism began.

According to Oakland police, nearly 200 businesses have been damaged or looted in some way in the city since George Floyd’s death in Minneapolis on Memorial Day sparked protests nationwide.

People can document the looting or vandalization of a business by visiting oaklandca.gov/services/category/report-a-problem or by calling (510) 777-3333. Business owners who have video or photographic evidence of a crime committed at their business can email the department at BusinessCrimes@oaklandca.gov.

Oakland police also advise businesses to join the department’s camera registry database, which allows residents and business owners to register the location of their video security systems. Officers could then contact a camera registrant if their footage is needed to investigate or solve a crime. Video systems can be registered at solar.oaklandnet.com/CameraReg.
