Bay Area coronavirus updates | Fri., June 12

The latest developments around the region related to the novel coronavirus, also known as COVID-19, as of Friday afternoon include:

  • Starting next week, the city of Martinez will close five blocks of Main Street from Alhambra Avenue east to Court Street and two blocks of Estudillo Street from Marina Vista south to Main Street to vehicle traffic on weekends, allowing restaurants to serve meals and retailers to display their wares on sidewalks and street space near their businesses.
  • Contra Costa County Library announced that 23 libraries in the county system Monday will begin offering a service allowing patrons to pick up books and other items they placed on hold online.
  • Union City’s budget is expected to be lower by $4 million due to the impact of the coronavirus, city officials said Thursday. The coronavirus crisis has caused the city to realize less revenue from sales, business license and transit-occupancy taxes as well as parking.
  • Layoffs, service cuts and other reductions are all on the table as Concord city leaders work to close a $14.6 million general fund deficit for the 2020-2021 fiscal year, as well as a $6.2 million revenue gap to end the current fiscal year.
