Bay Area coronavirus updates | Thurs., May 14

The latest developments around the region related to the novel coronavirus, also known as COVID-19, as of Thursday afternoon include:

  • A San Francisco church sued Zoom Video Communications Inc. in federal court in San Jose on Wednesday over a so-called “Zoombombing” incident in which an online invader disrupted a video Bible study class with pornographic images. The lawsuit was filed by Saint Paulus Lutheran Church and administrator Heddi Cundle, who organized the class held on May 6 via Zoom for eight students, most of whom were senior citizens.
  • The Monterey Jazz Festival is the latest event to be postponed or canceled because of the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic, with organizers announcing Thursday that the festival will not happen again until September 2021. The postponement is the first in the 62-year history of the festival.
  • Organizers of the annual Stern Grove Festival in San Francisco announced Thursday that this year’s series of Sunday concerts from June to August have all been canceled due to the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic. The 83rd annual version of the free outdoor festival was set to run every Sunday from June 14 to Aug. 16 at Sigmund Stern Grove near 19th Avenue and Sloat Boulevard.
  • The city of Hayward announced Wednesday rent relief grants for residents impacted financially by the novel coronavirus pandemic and who are facing displacement are now available. Under the program, the city will provide one-time payments of up to $2,500 per household.
  • As of Thursday at 2:30 p.m., officials have confirmed the following number of cases in the greater Bay Area region (“+” number added since last check Wed., May 13):
    • Alameda County: 2,234 cases (+56), 79 deaths (+3)
    • Contra Costa County: 1,089 cases (+9), 33 deaths
    • Marin County: 275 cases (+4), 14 deaths
    • Monterey County: 308 cases, (+9) 6 deaths
    • Napa County: 83 cases (+2), 3 deaths
    • San Francisco County: 1,999 cases (+5), 35 deaths
    • San Mateo County: 1,536 cases (+21), 65 deaths
    • Santa Clara County: 2,381 cases, 132 deaths
    • Santa Cruz County: 149 cases (+3), 2 deaths
    • Solano County: 397 cases (+9), 12 deaths (+1)
    • Sonoma County: 337 cases (+4), 4 deaths
    • Statewide: 73,164 cases (+2,023), 3,032 deaths (+98)
