Service opportunities for students

Super Stars Literacy

Parents working on the Student Engagement, Responsibility, and Volunteerism in our Elementary Schools (SERVES) group are rolling out regular service opportunities for students in Piedmont’s three elementary schools.

Listed below is a new project that is intended to connect Piedmont students/families during this challenging time while also contributing to the larger community.

Super Stars Literacy (SSL) is a non-profit organization based in Oakland that provides literacy support for elementary school students in under-served schools in our larger community.  It provides intervention services to under-performing K-2nd grade students, helping them develop the literacy and social skills that are the foundation for future learning.

SSL invites you to join its letter-writing campaign.  Since volunteers can no longer physically interact with SSL’s students, and school is canceled for the rest of the school year, SSL is asking volunteers (parents and students of all ages) to write letters to the 1st and 2nd graders in its program to let the kids know that the volunteers are thinking of them. You can write about some fun activities that you and your loved ones have been doing at home, what movies and shows you’ve been watching, how you stay motivated even though it is a difficult time right now, etc.

Letters can be handwritten and scanned, or typed and sent as a PDF file to the SSL coordinator at mabubakr@superstarsliteracy.org, and she will be able to distribute them to the students.
