The latest developments around the region related to the novel coronavirus, also known as COVID-19, as of Thursday afternoon include:
- The city of Alameda will begin a “slow streets” pilot program, similar to initiatives already in place in Oakland and San Francisco, that calls for implementing “soft” closures of selected streets in Alameda to through traffic in order to make it easier to maintain social distancing of more than six feet during the coronavirus pandemic.
- Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, San Francisco, San Mateo and Santa Clara counties as well as the city of Berkeley officially announced an extension Wednesday of the regional COVID-19 coronavirus shelter-in-place order through May 31 while easing operating restrictions for businesses that operate outdoors. The new order takes effect Monday following the conclusion of the region’s previous shelter-in-place order on May 3.
- Sausalito police say they will be enforcing parking restrictions and issuing citations for non-essential travel and social distancing violations this weekend to encourage people to follow state and local shelter orders and stay close to home during the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic.
- California Chief Justice Tani Cantil-Sakauye on Wednesday suspended criminal jury trials in the state for a total of 90 days from previous deadlines. The chief justice’s order adds another 30 days of suspension to a 60-day suspension she ordered in March in view of health and safety requirements during the coronavirus pandemic.
- As of Thursday at 1:45 p.m., officials have confirmed the following number of cases in the greater Bay Area region (“+” number added since last check Wed., Apr. 29):
- Alameda County: 1,603 cases (+35), 60 deaths (+3)
- Contra Costa County: 891 cases (+29), 27 deaths (+2)
- Marin County: 235 cases (+9), 13 deaths (+1)
- Monterey County: 206 cases (+15), 5 deaths
- Napa County: 67 cases, 2 deaths
- San Francisco County: 1,499 cases (+9), 25 deaths (+2)
- San Mateo County: 1,177 cases (+41), 48 deaths
- Santa Clara County: 2,134 cases, 111 deaths (+4)
- Santa Cruz County: 131 cases (+4), 2 deaths
- Solano County: 254 cases (+5), 5 deaths (+1)
- Sonoma County: 232 cases (+4), 2 deaths
- Statewide: 48,917 cases (+2,417), 1,982 deaths (+95)
