Bay Area coronavirus updates | Mon., Apr. 20

The latest developments around the region related to the novel coronavirus, also known as COVID-19, as of Monday afternoon include:

  • Marin County and the Marin County Foundation on Tuesday will ask the Marin County Board of Supervisors to double the size of the original COVID-19 Relief Fund, which was created March 24, with $1 million set aside for immediate rental assistance for people who were either homeless or threatened with homelessness because of the economic fallout of the novel coronavirus pandemic.
  • The Marathon Petroleum Co. plans to temporarily idle its refinery in unincorporated Contra Costa County, because of plummeting demand for gasoline amid COVID-19 coronavirus-related travel restrictions, a refinery spokeswoman said Sunday. Work to wind down production at the Marathon Martinez Refinery began Sunday, said refinery spokeswoman Patty Deutsche, and will be complete by April 27.
  • The San Francisco Sheriff’s Office on Sunday reported its second case of an inmate testing positive for the COVID-19 coronavirus.
