Piedmont boys basketball wins opener

Luke Barrett scored 17 points and grabbed six rebounds to help the Highlanders win their season opener over Ygnacio Valley on November 27, 76-27.

Luke Harris added 19 points, four assists, and three steals for the Highlanders.

“We played great team defense and moved the ball really well on offense,” Piedmont coach Ben Spencer said after winning his debut as varsity coach.

The defense was smothering. The Warriors made just seven of 44 shots from the field and committed 20 turnovers. Ygnacio Valley was held under 10 points in all four quarters.

Jojo Murphy had nine points and four assists. Josh Eidam added nine points off the bench. The Highlanders recorded 15 assists on 28 made field goals. They also hit on 11 of their 23 3-pointers (47 percent).

Alan Lloyd led the Warriors with nine points.

Piedmont jumped on Ygnacio Valley from the start, racing to a 27-5 lead after one quarter. Barrett scored 10 points in the quarter, including two 3-pointers. Murphy hit all three of his 3-pointers in the period. By halftime, it was 51-12 in favor of the Highlanders.

Piedmont next faces Alameda on the road on December 3. The Highlanders open the Piedmont Tournament on December 5 against Envision Academy.
