The Piedmont High School girls tennis team dropped a pair of matches the week of September 10 against two very strong teams.
The Highlanders fell 8-1 to Miramonte on September 10. They then lost 6-1 at home against Bishop O’Dowd in a West Alameda County League match on September 12.
Audrey Edel beat Miramonte’s Henrriette Schmuck in the No. 2 singles match for Piedmont’s only victory, prevailing in a tie-breaker, 6-3, 3-6, 10-7. Lily Orta played well in the No. 5 match, falling to the Matadors Valerie Swe, 6-4, 7-6 (7).
In doubles, Audrey Call and Amanda Becker lost to Riley George and Shaili Lakhotia, 6-4, 6-3.
Against Bishop O’Dowd, Call teamed with Marlowe McEfee to win the No. 1 doubles over Ava Murphy and Lauryn Davis, 6-0, 6-3. The other two doubles matches were both three-set affairs. Maddie Young paired with Amanda Becker at No. 2, losing to Isi Szuhaj and Cecily Hayes, 5-7, 6-1, 6-3. Mara LaForte and Morgan Bouch lost to Marianne Taner and Alexa Alfred at No. 3 doubles, 2-6, 6-2, 6-3.
Edel played a strong match at No. 2 singles, losing to Bishop O’Dowd’s Georgia Bunkers, 6-3, 2-6, 10-4. Evian Jiang won the No. 1 singles match for the Dragons, beating Emily Becker, 6-1, 6-3.
“We had some close matches against both strong teams, and with a little improvement we can turn things around,” Piedmont coach James Landes said.
