PBSF Highlights – March 23-24

BASEBALL

Shetland

River Cats 9 vs. Thunder 9

The River Cats and Thunder played an action packed game Saturday, which showed the hard work put in at practice. The River Cats’ Jack Dorsey had two solid hits and made a great throw from the outfield. Ben Roth showed off his speed in the outfield running down some great hits by the Thunder. And the Cats’ Zane Peyer made two great plays in left field. Lucas Chen impressed at the plate with numerous hits and some sparkling glove work at first base. Finally, Max Centeno gobbled up grounders in the infield.

Pinto

Red Sox 7 vs. Braves 7

Sammy Miller & Kai Snyder

The Red Sox played the Braves in Pinto action last Sunday at Witter Field. The Red Sox put on a hitting show, batting over .500 for the game. The Red Sox’ Preston Baenen, James Williford, and Nolan Jacobs each clobbered a double, and Kai Lopez hammered a triple.  The Sox’ Sam Root and John Arney each had three hits on the day. The Red Sox also played well in the field. Theo Borstel and Teddy Lee led the team defensively with great fielding at pitcher’s assistant and first base. 

Cardinals 13 vs. Nationals 13

It was a great day for baseball as the Cardinals took on the Nationals at Witter Field on Sunday.  Defensively, it was an exciting game from the get-go. In the top of the 1st with a man on first, the Cardinals’ Nico Certa caught a fly ball and threw to first baseman Finn Kelley for a double play. Holden Fasteau, Nico Certa, and Jack Shim also all made great defensive plays for the Cardinals. On offense, Ari Moskovitz, Martin Johnson, and Gabriel Jiang all hit the ball well, but it was the National defense that really stole the show.

Rangers vs. A’s

The Rangers and Athletics played to an exciting tie. The A’s shined at the plate with extra-base hits from Travers Kemp, Will Harris, Aidan Shartsis, and Lucas Lang. The Rangers kept pace due to strong defensive performances from Julien Tindall, Jacob Peterson, Luis Co, and Gael Fierro. On the offensive front, the Rangers were led by Dylan Jerez, Julien Tindall, Kyle Walsh, and Jeb Burden, with Oliver Hurwitz and Luis Co also contributing hits.

Mustang

Impact 2 vs. Hurricanes 1

The Hurricanes and Impact played two close contests this weekend.  In Saturday’s opener, the Hurricanes’ starter, Hunter Fasteau, struck out five over two innings of work.  The Hurricanes opened the scoring in the 4th inning when Hayden Peterson smashed a grounder to shortstop, knocking in Drew Devries. But the Impact battled back.  After tying the game at one in the bottom of the 4th, the Impact pulled ahead with a bases loaded walk in the 5th.

Hurricanes 7 vs. Impact 6

The second contest between the Hurricanes and Impact featured a lot more offense.  Hayden Petersen hit a towering homer to center in the bottom of the 4th. In the 5th, the Hurricanes’ Maximo Miller walked, used his speed to steal second and third base, and ultimately scored the winning run. In the bottom of the 5th, the Impact had runners on first and second with two outs and were looking to tie the score.  But the Hurricanes’ Ethan Block made a perfect throw from third base to preserve the win for the Hurricanes. 

Thunder 12 vs. Storm 10

Mateo Long

The Storm and Thunder battled Saturday in a close game.  For the Thunder, Matthew Medina threw two shutout innings, while going 3 for 3 at the plate with a triple. Mateo Long homered to the left field gap in the 3rd, and added a triple in the 4th.  Henry Call had two huge hits, including a double that knocked in three in the 3rd.  George Saunders singled twice, while Henry Stein singled three times and caught a runner stealing in the 6th.  Aiden Bell pitched three innings of solid middle relief. For the Storm, Sammy Ragones had multiple hits.  Zachary Carter tripled in the 3rd to start the scoring. Deniz Radzik, Griffin Guidi, and William Carter keyed a 6th inning rally with consecutive base hits.

SOFTBALL

8U

Piedmont Panthers 5 vs. Oakland Emeralds 3

The first inning of the 8u Panthers softball game had some major excitement as Paige Rampton got the first hit of the game and made an awesome defensive play at first base. After three innings and the game nearing an end, the Panthers were one run behind. But then the Panther’s Hannah Joerger delivered a line-drive double to knock in the tying run. Paloma Bell singled down the 3rd baseline, bringing in Joerger with the game-winning run.

Piedmont Purple Panthers 16 vs. Oakland Strikers 9

The Purple Panthers got their first win of the season Saturday behind strong hitting. Most of the Panthers hitters were perfect at the plate and the team had offensive contributions throughout the lie-up.  Lead-off hitter Amelia Carter scored four runs. Ayla Blanford had a double, a single, and knocked in two.  Jillian Upton had two hits and scored twice.  Defensively, the Panthers had nice plays from Izara Dando, Peyton Watson, Nola Kra-Caskey, Blanford, and Carter. Dando and Watson made their pitching debuts, and combined to strike out three Oakland Strikers.
