Piedmont girls soccer falls in NCS semifinals

The Piedmont High School girls soccer team saw its season end with a 5-1 loss to Cardinal Newman-Santa Rosa in a match played February 20 at El Molino High School.

The loss in the North Coast Section Division 4 semifinals ended Piedmont’s season. The Highlanders finished 13-6-1. Cardinal Newman (14-4-1) advanced to the NCS championship game against Marin Academy on February 23.

The Cardinals got off to a quick start, scoring early to take a 1-0 lead. They extended that lead with a goal late in the first half, a real back-breaker according to Piedmont coach Dan Chubbock.

“A goal right before halftime or right after halftime is always a little bit of a killer,” Chubbock said.

Cardinal Newman made it 3-0 before Ashley Nelson converted off of an assist from Ceci Brien. Chubbock said that Nelson had another chance shortly thereafter but just missed wide. That might have been the Highlanders’ best shot at getting back in the game. Instead, the Cardinals added two more goals late.

“We kept fighting, we kept battling,” Chubbock said. “The girls never gave up. In fairness, we were outmatched. We knew we were in for a battle. This team is by far the best team we played this year. And probably the last couple of years. They wouldn’t be out of place in Division 1.”

Chubbock added that the loss didn’t diminish a terrific season for the Highlanders.

“It was a good season,” he said. “There’s no shame in going out at that stage.”
