With a cast of fairies, mortals, and plenty of on-stage mischief Georges Balanchine’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” is always a lavish affair. But San Francisco Ballet’s forthcoming production of the twentieth-century classic takes it up another a notch.
This season’s run of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” is also the North American debut of iconic French designer Christian Lacroix’s opulent costume and set designs, which were commissioned by the Paris Opera Ballet and debuted in Paris in 2017.
“It is a fun night out, it is a comedy,” said Tamara Rojo, the company’s new artistic director. “I am so excited to be able to bring this lush, colorful and rich production to the audiences of San Francisco.”
The ballet includes a score by Felix Mendelssohn performed by Volti San Francisco and the SF Ballet Orchestra, and a cast of more than 100 dancers.
Additionally, on Saturday, March 23, the ballet presents A Midsummer Night’s Dream Tea in the Green Room of the Veterans Building with family-friendly activities, savory and sweet treats, and a matinee performance of the ballet. Tickets to the event, including the performance, start at $300 for a child and $600 for an adult; options that do not include a performance ticket are also available.
