A large mudslide Thursday morning closed Moraga Avenue from the Corporation Yard at Red Rock Road to Maxwelton Road for several hours while crews cleared the area and hauled out mud and other debris.
Piedmont public works crews were notified of the slide near the intersection of Moraga Avenue and Maxwelton Road around 5:30 a.m., said Public Works Director Daniel Gonzalez. A water line leading to a home on Maxwelton Road “had disconnected and was causing the side of the hill to hydrofract out — essentially high pressure water was flowing out the side of the hill,” he said.
“The concern is that there’s going to have to be a considerable amount of remediation that goes on, because almost all of this is private [land], it’s going to have to occur on this private site,” Gonzalez said. “With a forecast for more precipitation Saturday and Sunday the site will need to be secured within the next 48 hours. It’s very doable but it has to happen quickly.”
