Long time Piedmont resident and graduate gemologist Sacha Grippando returns to continue her lecture series focused on the development of the jewelry arts, with an illustrated lecture exploring the spectacular jewelry collections of the Duchess of Windsor and Elizabeth Taylor. The first of two parts, this event will focus on the Duchess of Windsor’s amazing collection. (Part 2 will be scheduled for later this winter, date and time TBA.) Come learn more about this fabulous period and its jewelry. Doors open at 5:45 pm. Donations to the Piedmont Center for the Arts will be gratefully accepted at the door and refreshments will be provided following the talk.
Bold, colorful and extravagent jewelry from the 1930s-1960s
The Duchess of Windsor and Elizabeth Taylor amassed what are considered today to be the best collections of jewelry from the 20th century. Both collections were also sold at auction with enormous success. As the majority of their collections were acquired as gifts from their husbands these collections are truly legacies of love. Although the jewelry in their collections was predominantly acquired as gifts, this does not diminish the influence that both women had on the types and quality of pieces they were gifted. Their husbands either worked closely with them in acquiring these pieces or were inspired by their wives’ fabulous tastes.
