CalMatters is tracking hospitalizations in California of people who have tested positive for the disease caused by the novel coronavirus or who are suspected of having COVID-19.

On April 1, the California Department of Public Health released a dashboard breaking down statewide hospitalizations of positive and suspected COVID-19 patients.

Expected to be updated daily, the breakdown covers four categories of hospitalizations: hospitalized patients who tested positive for the virus, hospitalized patients suspected of having the virus, patients in intensive care who tested positive for the virus and patients in intensive care suspected of having the virus.

The data used in the following graphics were collected from the publicly available hospitalizations dashboard. We expect to update it each afternoon as the dashboard updates. Any questions about the data can be sent to CalMatters’ data journalist and web developer John D’Agostino.

1,922 COVID-19 Patients

816 COVID-19 Patients in ICU

3,481 Suspected COVID-19 Patients

618 Suspected COVID-19 Patients in ICU

Updated April 2, 2020 with 92% of hospitals reporting to the state.
