The latest developments around the region related to the novel coronavirus, also known as COVID-19, as of Thursday morning include:
- An emergency paid sick leave ordinance recommendation was passed unanimously by the San Jose City Council during a special meeting on Wednesday, setting the stage for its approval next week.
- More than 200 Save Mart, Lucky and FoodMaxx grocery stores will open their doors one hour early and one hour later for police, fire and health care personnel during the novel coronavirus pandemic.
- Santa Clara County law enforcement will issue citations instead of making arrests for a handful of offenses to promote safety and prevent jail crowding during the spread of novel coronavirus, including anyone who would be arrested on a warrant for failing to appear in court for pending misdemeanors, diversion matters or post-conviction matters other than violent felonies and those who would be arrested for felonies with standard bail set at $25,000 or less.
- Following comments earlier in the day by Gov. Gavin Newsom and two state education leaders, schools in Santa Clara County and the cities of Oakland and Santa Rosa will move to distance learning for the remainder of the school year because of the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic.

- San Francisco County: 450 cases (+16), 7 deaths
- San Mateo County: 453 cases (+65), 10 deaths
- Santa Clara County: 956 cases (+66), 32 deaths (+2)
- Santa Cruz County: 54 cases (+5), 1 death
