Two people were arrested Tuesday and two others detained following a shooting at Skyline High School in Oakland in which a gun was recovered. No one was injured, according to police and multiple news outlets.
Evidence of a shooting, including the weapon, was found on campus, Oakland Police Chief Jake Bassett said at a news briefing. He declined to say if any of the four were associated with the school and did not provide any identifying information about them. The Mercury News reported that the two people arrested were students, but didn’t specifically identify them as attending Skyline.
The shooting occurred near the school’s theatre building at about 11:30 a.m., the newspaper reported.
In a letter to the school community shared on social media Tuesday, Principal Rebecca Huang wrote:
We put the school on lockdown as quickly as we could and got almost all students secure in classrooms. Students who were outside were immediately brought inside to safety. Everyone on campus was safe and no one was injured.
KVTU reported that assistant Principal Coron Brinson told parents gathered outside the school that “they weren’t shooting at any particular person.”
The lockdown was lifted and students were released around 2 p.m. Skyline will remain closed Wednesday, Huang said:
We would also like to give students some time away from school to process what we went through during this incident. Once we return, staff will have resources to help students process today’s events through restorative conversations and will also have behavioral health staff on campus to ensure anyone who needs support receives it.
A 14-year old male student was stabbed at the same school five times in early December. He survived, but required surgery for a punctured kidney and colon, according to his mother. Police reported that a suspect in the attack was taken into custody at the time. According to KVTU the suspect was 15. Juvenile criminal records in the state are deeply confidential and there was no immediate information on how the matter was adjudicated.
