The Highlanders rallied for five runs in the top of the seventh, only to see Salesian come back with two in the bottom of the inning to walk off a 7-6 victory on March 10.
Chira Lundin hit a bases-loaded double in the top of the seventh to give the Highlanders a 6-5 lead. Morgan Hunt had hit a two-run home run earlier in the inning. The other run scored on a bases-loaded walk to Maddy Meadows.
A Piedmont error in the bottom of the seventh allowed two Pride runners to score and win the game.
Salesian took a 4-0 lead early on. Sara Cushing tripled in a run for the Pride in the first, and Salesian plated three in the second.
Meantime, the Piedmont bats were quiet despite Cushing putting runners on right and left. Piedmont had three hits in the first five innings, while Cushing walked 10 hitters. Two singles, a walk, and an error gave the Highlanders four baserunners in the third. But Leah Bell was caught stealing after leading off the inning with a single, and Julia Banuelos grounded out with the bases loaded to end the threat.
In the sixth, Piedmont finally broke through. With one out, Gretchen Gerhardy hit a one-out double. Annabel Castronovo singled her to third. A walk to Bell loaded the bases with one out.
Lundin then hit into a sacrifice fly double play, as Castronovo was thrown out at third trying to advance behind Gerhardy scoring. The inning ended with Piedmont trailing 4-1.
Salesian got that run back in the bottom of the 6th, setting up the Highlanders’ rally in the top of the seventh.
