Piedmont girls tennis keeps rolling

The Piedmont High School girls tennis team had another strong week, defeating College Prep and Alameda.

The Highlanders defeated College Prep at home on Sept. 27, 5-2. Tanya Kononova defeated Sonam Manghai at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-2. Emma Eisemon beat Natalie Goldberg at No. 3, 6-0, 6-4. College Prep got wins at No. 2 (Angela Wang over Anne Jumper, 7-6 (4), 6-2) and No. 4 (Sophia Bitton over Carolina Romanczuk, 6-1, 6-1).

But Piedmont swept the doubles to take the match. At No. 1, Mara LaForte and Michaela Bini defeated Adele Beamer and Leah Ludhansky in a terrific match, 6-2, 5-7, 10-8.  Kate Jumper and Cecilia DeFazio won at No. 2 over Lexi Zhu and Gia Chhabra, 6-3, 6-4. Arianna Kortum and Sophia Kalamas teamed to win the No. 3 match over Makela Fabio and Daphne Green, 6-1, 6-3.

On Sept. 28, the Highlanders recorded a 4-3 win at home over Alameda. Again, Piedmont swept the doubles. LaForte and Bini defeated Angelina Yi and Vankhanh Hoang, 4-6, 7-6 (5), 6-2. DeFazio and Eisemon beat Mia Johnson and Hannah Kim, 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 at No. 2. Kate Jumper and Kortum defeated Sara Jallali and Sarah Park at No. 3, 6-1, 6-1.

Kononova beat Juliana Johnson in the No. 1 singles match, 6-2, 6-2. Alameda’s Renata Serna defeated Anne Jumper at No. 2, 6-4, 7-6 (6). Hornet Allison Kwan downed Romanczuk at No. 3, 7-5, 6-1. And Ashley Tan won No. 4 for Alameda, beating Ellie Broscow, 6-3, 6-2.

Piedmont won its first Foothill Division match in West Alameda County Conference play on Sept. 22, beating Castro Valley on the road, 6-1. Kononova defeated Justine Fong at No. 1, 6-3, 6-0. Anne Jumper downed Ngoc Nguyen at No. 2, 6-2, 6-3. Romanczuk beat Aleiksmra Hukra in the No. 4 match, 6-2, 6-2. Castro Valley’s Nicole Dong outlasted Eisemon at No. 3, 6-0, 5-7, 10-4.

LaForte and Bini led another sweep of the doubles, beating Tasha Schauer and Livia Sharky at No. 1, 6-0, 6-2. Kate Jumper and Kortum handled Bonnie Wong and Laina Xhang at No. 2, 6-0, 6-4. DeFazio and Abigail Call defeated Ashley Ortega and Claresia Son at No. 3, 6-0, 6-4.
