Letter to the Editor | Let’s elect proven local leaders

In our small and very engaged community, we benefit most from leaders who are good listeners, who do their research, and who work well with others.

As we’ve all experienced, so often the most difficult issues are ones that weren’t expected: for example, the impact of COVID on our schools, and the State-imposed requirement to plan for more housing in Piedmont. We need level-headed leaders who respond well to unexpected challenges by listening to all community members, who keep an open mind and seriously consider differing opinions, who study the options and consider all ramifications, and who work respectfully with staff and stakeholders in support of community goals.

I wholeheartedly endorse Betsy Andersen and Jen Long for City Council. Betsy and Jen are both experienced attorneys who are also excellent listeners, clear thinkers, and thoughtful policy-makers. As they have proven by their service on our City Council, Betsy and Jen ask good questions, meet with residents to navigate challenges, and look for creative opportunities to strengthen our community.

My third vote for City Council will go to Tom Ramsey, an architect whose long service to our Planning Commission demonstrates his ability to listen carefully and make thoughtful well-reasoned decisions.

While I was still on the Board of Education, I had the pleasure of working with Ruchi Medhekar and Lindsay Thomasson. They both served as Parent Club Presidents during the pandemic, and they clearly are committed to the success of our students and will work collaboratively to maintain excellence in our public schools. Ruchi and Lindsay are each impressive in their own right, and they will be outstanding representatives for the community on our School Board.

We are fortunate to have so many talented community members step up to volunteer their time on behalf of our city and schools. Please join me in voting for these proven leaders in the upcoming election!
