The Highlanders had a strong tournament at Milpitas the weekend of October 4-5. Piedmont swept all three of its games, beating Santa Clara, Cupertino and Sobrato-Morgan Hill.
The weekend came after a tough loss to Berkeley on October 2 in West Alameda County League play.
“The tournament started slowly, then came together nicely,” Piedmont coach John Savage said.
The Highlanders opened with a 9-7 win over Santa Clara. Tag Walter scored four goals to lead Piedmont. Dariush Kashani had 10 saves.
The next match came against Cupertino, and the Highlanders again prevailed, 13-7. Jack Dunlap and Harrison Miller each scored three times, and three other Piedmont players scored twice. Two players were ejected for receiving three exclusions, and the Highlanders were able to manage the lead down the stretch, according to Savage.
Piedmont won its third match over Sobrato, 10-9, with Jake Hart scoring the game-winning goal in the final seconds. The Highlanders trailed 9-6 with five minutes to play, according to Savage. Jacob Hatch had scored seven of the goals for the Bulldogs.
Savage ordered a double-team on Hatch, and Shane Miller proceeded to score three consecutive goals to tie the score, setting up Hart’s game-winner. Miller and Max Wagener each scored three times in the game.
On October 2, Berkeley got out to an early 6-1 lead and Piedmont was never able to come back in a 19-6 defeat. Wagener scored three goals for the Highlanders.
The Highlanders play next on October 17 against Lick Wilmerding in San Francisco.
