Update 8:45 p.m. Tues, Oct. 8: Local news stations KPIX and KTVU are reporting that Caltrans and PG&E will work through the night to install generators to keep the Caldecott open; working on a plan for the Tom Lantos tunnel.
The Tom Lantos and Caldecott tunnels may close as early as Tuesday evening because of the PG&E power shutoff, Caltrans officials said. The Tom Lantos Tunnels are on state Highway 1 in San Mateo County while the Caldecott Tunnels connect Alameda and Contra Costa counties along state Highway 24.
The tunnels need power to operate, according to Caltrans. State transportation officials are working with PG&E to provide emergency power to the Caldecott Tunnels, but this remains only a possibility right now. The Caldecott Tunnels are heavily used by commuters.
Motorists are urged to use 511.org or listen to newscasts for the latest information. Both sets of tunnels may be closed for as many as five days. Caltrans officials said they have activated changeable message signs near the tunnels and the latest detour information will be provided. BART will not be affected by the power outage. Caltrain and buses in the San Mateo County Transit District are expected to be unaffected as well.
