A year can bring a lot of change. Fifteen months after the pandemic shut its doors, the Oakland Museum of California will reopen with a multi-million-dollar grounds and museum renovation and a new organizational vision.
An advance opening for museum members will be held June 11-13, with a full reopening to the general public — including a weekend of free access — June 18-20. Social distancing and covid safety protocols will be in place.

Like many other cultural organizations, the museum pivoted to at-home and virtual programming during the pandemic. A planned reopening in November was cancelled when COVID cases skyrocketed in California and the state leaped back into the more restrictive “purple” tier for reopening the economy.
In April, the museum announced an organizational change, including layoffs and a reduced operational budget, due to the financial stresses of the pandemic.
“Along with a reduction in staff positions, OMCA will implement a new staffing structure, compensation philosophy, and internal processes to advance its commitment to becoming an anti-racist and equitable multicultural organization as it prepares to reopen in the coming months,” museum representatives said in a statement.
