Piedmont High School’s badminton team returned to action after Spring Break with a 9-6 win at Encinal on April 23. The Highlanders took eight of nine doubles points to rack up the victory and improve to 8-5 on the season.
Piedmont’s Jeremy Yiu and Sophie Eng defeated Encinal’s Kinki Chung and Wing Ma at No. 1 mixed doubles, 21-7, 21-17. Thomas Yu and Vanessa Tang teamed up at No. 2 to defeat Gary Li and Ruoyin Huang, 21-13, 21-8. At No. 3, it was Kyle Chan and Vivian Wu downing Jessica Zhou and Daniel Arciaga, 21-11-21-5.
Joy Zhou and Christine Zhou won the No. 1 girls doubles for the Highlanders, beating Jennifer Zhou and Wendy Guo, 21-11, 21-14. Amy Foo and Isabelle Griffis took the No. 2 match over Tien Nguyen and Hillary Ma, 21-11, 21-9. The third girls doubles was a forfeit victory for Piedmont.
In boys doubles, Richard Wong and Nick Wong teamed up to win the No. 1 match for Encinal, beating David Zhou and Anthony Wong, 19-21, 21-18, 21-6. Piedmont’s Josh DeBare and Andrew Brown won the No. 2 boys doubles over Yao Lei and Zhi Chen, 21-11, 21-12. The third boys doubles match was also a forfeit win for the Highlanders.
In singles, Piedmont’s only win came from Joseph Haggerty in the boys No. 2 match. Haggerty beat Albert Huang, 21-12, 21-7. The Jets Uthinh Pham won the boys No. 1 over Lucian Lin 21-12, 24-22.
In girls singles, Encinal’s Yi Na Lin beat Bridget Bentley at No. 1, 21-3, 21-2.
