The invention of farming changed human history forever. Before farming, humans were primarily hunter-gatherers. As we have adopted new methods of planting and procuring food, the world we rely on for resources has changed as well. It is time to come to a reckoning about the methods that we use to farm, eat food, and what resources we use along the way.
Climate change has been influenced by many different sectors, but one that is not often talked about is agriculture. Following the “Green Revolution” of the 1960’s and the increased yields brought about by advancements such as increased pesticide usage and the mechanization of equipment, farming radically changed both domestically and internationally. While many of the outcomes have been beneficial, there have been serious side effects, including environmental outcomes that must be addressed immediately if we want our food production to continue.
These issues and more are addressed in the documentary Kiss the Ground, which released this year. Although “soil health” doesn’t sound thrilling, I promise that the revelations from this documentary are surprising and worthwhile. Caring for our shared environment involves all of us, from policy makers to consumers to farmers.
With all this in mind, the City of Piedmont and Piedmont Connect have teamed up to bring you a free screening of Kiss the Ground. Details below:
