A busy stretch of Broadway in downtown Oakland will soon bear the name of one of the city’s most famous political organizations — the Black Panther Party.
On Saturday, local luminaries will gather at the intersection of 15th Street and Broadway to celebrate the newly designated Black Panther Party Boulevard, according to an announcement Monday from the Dr. Huey P. Newton Foundation.
The renaming and ribbon-cutting ceremony will take place during the Black Panther Party 60th Anniversary event, which includes a two-day conference, gala and community gathering, among other activities, running from Thursday through Sunday.
Last week, the Oakland City Council voted unanimously to name a stretch of Broadway between 14th and 17th streets in honor of the organization, which Huey Newton and Bobby Seale founded in 1966.
“Sixty years ago, Huey and Bobby began something in Oakland that would ultimately reach communities around the world,” said Fredrika Newton, president and co-founder of the Dr. Huey P. Newton Foundation and Black Panther Party Museum. “Naming Broadway, home to the Black Panther Party Museum, as Black Panther Party Boulevard cements the Party’s legacy in the heart of downtown Oakland, recognizing a movement that shaped every corner of this city and continues to inspire generations.”
People can begin gathering at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at 15th Street and Broadway for the event.
