Brownies and Girl Scouts learn how to exercise their First Amendment rights at an Oct. 4, 2026 event organized by the League of Women Voters Piedmont

Last Sunday Oct. 4, nearly 40 Daisy, Brownie, and Junior Girl Scouts from Piedmont and Oakland learned about democracy and citizenship at a collaboration event.

The event was organized by Piedmont League of Women Voters President Lisa Gardner and member Jennifer Giessler, along with Girl Scout Temescal Service Unit 303 Advisor Buffy Yeh.

The kindergarten through fifth graders learned about democracy and about the levels of government. Piedmont Mayor Betsy Andersen and Lorrel Plimier talked to the girls about being mayor and about what lawyers do. They watched about suffrage and talked about current women in Congress. The brownies practiced how to perform a flag ceremony. They learned about the Piedmont Historical Walk, the qualities of a good citizen, and about community service. The girls were also introduced to what the LWV does and about the importance of voting.  They even got to vote themselves for their favorite Halloween candy, which turned out to be M&Ms.

The highlight of the event was choosing a topic that they felt strongly about and painting a protest sign. They then carried it to City Hall while learning and singing “This Land is Your Land”.
