A group of Piedmont volunteers is creating a new recreational activity designed to bring people together through the simple pleasure of singing.
The organizers are inviting anyone interested in singing—regardless of their musical experience or ability—to
an organizational meeting on Wednesday, Oct. 14, at 12:30 p.m. at the Piedmont Community Center in
Piedmont Park.
The idea behind the activity is simple: create an opportunity for people to get together regularly to sing familiar and enjoyable songs in a relaxed, non-religious setting. There will be no auditions. The emphasis will be on having fun, meeting people, and enjoying the experience of singing together.
Piedmont has some existing musical organizations, but the new activity’s organizers believe there is an opportunity and need for a group designed for people, who may not have the talents that some musical groups require, to simply come together and sing.
The organizers envision an activity that will be free or involve only a minimal cost for participants. The Piedmont Recreation Department is sponsoring this new activity and has offered space at 801 Magnolia Avenue for the group to meet and practice.
There is growing recognition of the health, social, and personal benefits of singing. It involves breathing, concentration, memory, and physical coordination. Singing with others also provides an opportunity for social connection and community—something that can be especially valuable as people get older.
Exactly what the group will be, what songs it will sing, how often it will meet, and when regular singing sessions will begin will be determined at the Oct. 14 organizational meeting.
Everyone interested in participating is welcome. Those who cannot attend but would like more information can
