The Golden Gate National Recreation Area, a protected space managed by the National Park Service, held a ceremony Wednesday to celebrate the opening of the Vista Point Trail on the north end of the Golden Gate Bridge.
Spanning 1,600 feet, the Vista Point Trail offers a safer route to Marin for cyclists and pedestrians who travel over the Golden Gate Bridge. The trail allows riders to bypass Alexander Avenue, a downhill road that is described as “the most dangerous mile in Marin” by the Marin County Bicycle Coalition and Huffman. Linking U.S. Highway 101 and Sausalito, this dangerous stretch of road saw over 80 injuries to bicyclists between 2011 and 2020, according to the coalition.
“We’re going to save lives today,” U.S. Rep. Jared Huffman, D-San Rafael, said at the end of his speech to celebrate the opening of the new trail.
“It’s been 40 years of waiting, and it is a lot safer for commuters and tourists alike,” cyclist Craig Roemer said. “Having to deal with the 101, it can get messy up there. Now you don’t have to deal with the traffic.”

Multiple entities, including the GGNRA and Golden Gate Bridge Highway and Transportation District, came together to bring the project to fruition.
For many bike riders, the Vista Point Trail gives them peace of mind, allowing them to continue their commute without having to stress over fast-moving traffic in an area riddled with potholes and no bike lanes.
Deborah Clearwaters, an avid cyclist, celebrated the new trail.
“To be able to be off-road and have this twisting vista of the bridge is incredible,” she said. “This just levels up the safety and comfort.”
