Girl Scout Troop #33521, made up of 15 high school juniors, will host a garage sale on Sunday, Sept. 27, selling interesting used items from their homes to promote sustainability while fundraising for their activities.
The garage sale will coincide with the Harvest Festival, the yearly gathering of music and food in Piedmont Park. This gives people enjoying the Harvest Festival a perfect opportunity to venture over and explore the vintage clothes, children’s toys, sports gear, and hand made objects, from jewelry to ceramics. The garage sale will take place at 39 Craig Avenue, just a few blocks away from the park, from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m.
Girl Scout Troop #33521 was started in 2017, and since then has grown from a few students at Wildwood to almost 20 members from Piedmont and Oakland. They have done a variety of activities, and gone on many adventures, ranging from camping to learning from Piedmont’s firefighters. Their earlier years were characterized by badge earning — first-aid, babysitting, woodworking, eating healthy, and many more.
Along with that, many of the members completed a Silver Award in middle school. Girls spent more than 50 hours addressing a community issue. Two girls worked on advocacy for food insecurity, and another pair built a website full of information about animal care, and yet another pair created a brochure to support new immigrants in the East Bay.
Now students at Piedmont High School, Head Royce, and College Preparatory, they are focused on volunteering and earning their Gold Awards, the most prestigious award in Girl Scouts, and the next step after their Silver Award. Girl Scouts pursuing a Gold Award have to individually collect at least 80 hours, and work with prominent experts to create a profound, lasting impact on their community in an area of their choice. Some examples of Gold Award projects include supporting girls in a male dominated sport, increasing excitement about math for kids, and educating people to empower introverts.
