Major League Baseball announced Friday that San Francisco has been selected to host the 2028 All-Star Game.
The Giants and their waterfront ballpark Oracle Park in July 2028 will host baseball’s best players in the game also called the Midsummer Classic, according to MLB, which noted that it is the fourth time San Francisco will host the All-Star Game and related events such as the Home Run Derby.
“With its passionate fanbase, world-class ballpark, and rich baseball history, San Francisco will be an outstanding host for All-Star Week, which culminates in one of Major League Baseball’s best traditions, the Midsummer Classic,” MLB commissioner Rob Manfred said in a statement. “We look forward to bringing the excitement of All-Star Week and the celebration of baseball to the Bay Area.”
The Giants last hosted the game at what was then AT&T Park in 2007, and also previously hosted it at Candlestick Park in 1984 and 1961.
San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie said in a statement, “I want to thank Commissioner Manfred and Major League Baseball for recognizing the work we’ve done in San Francisco and bringing this incredible event to our city. I also want to thank the Giants for their partnership throughout this process and their continued commitment to San Francisco.”
Giants CEO and president Larry Baer said, “We’re thrilled to welcome the Midsummer Classic to San Francisco, the ultimate celebration of Major League Baseball and one of our game’s greatest annual traditions. This is a tremendous opportunity to showcase our organization, our city, and the incredible passion of our fans on baseball’s biggest summer stage.”
The Chicago Cubs are set to host the 2027 All-Star Game before it comes to San Francisco the following year.
